Answers to questions that come up often about Direct Connect and this wiki.
Is Direct Connect still active?
Yes. It is smaller than at its 2000s peak, but there are still active hubs and maintained clients like DC++ and AirDC++. See DC clients.
Which client should I use?
It depends on your platform and how you like to work. DC++ on Windows or AirDC++ on Windows and Linux are good starting points. See Choosing a client.
Why can't I download anything, or why is search empty?
Most often this is passive mode: your client cannot accept incoming connections because no ports are forwarded. Set up active mode and it usually clears up. See Active vs. passive mode.
Do I have to share files, and how much?
Sharing is how the network works, and many hubs set a minimum share before you can join. Some hubs are open. See Sharing files.
Is my connection encrypted?
Only on TLS hubs (ADCS and NMDCS) and when your client's TLS options are enabled. Plain hubs are not encrypted. See Installation & setup.
Is Direct Connect legal and safe?
Direct Connect is a neutral peer-to-peer technology, like the web or email. Whether a given file is legal to share or download depends on the content and your local laws, copyright included. Other users can see your nick and share, and in active mode your IP address during a transfer. A VPN changes that. See VPN & privacy.
What is the difference between NMDC and ADC?
Can I run my own hub?
Yes. With hub software you can run your own hub and set your own rules. See Running a hub.
What is DCVault?
DCVault is a community wiki and forum about Direct Connect. It is not the network itself, it is a place to learn about it and discuss it. Anyone can contribute.
