Direct Connect quick start: join your first hub
This guide gets you from nothing to your first hub in a few steps.
1. Pick a client
Choose a Direct Connect client for your platform. If you are unsure, start with DC++ on Windows or AirDC++ on Windows or Linux. See Choosing a client and the client list.
2. Install and set it up
Install the client and work through the first-run settings: your nickname, connection, downloads, and your share. The Installation & setup walkthrough covers each screen.
3. Share something
The network lives on sharing, and many hubs require a minimum share before they let you in. Pick folders you are happy to offer, and your client builds them into a file list for others to download. See Sharing files.
4. Get active mode working
Open the right ports on your router so other clients can reach you. This makes search and downloads work properly. See Active vs. passive mode.
5. Join a hub
Open the public hub list, pick a hub, and connect. Check its share rules first. See Finding & joining hubs.
6. Search and download
Browse a user's file list or search the hub, then download straight from other users. See Searching & downloading.
Everyone needs a little time to get used to DC. If something is unclear, ask on the forum.
